Spring break—done!

What a jam-packed week.

  • 2 work days for me
  • 2 dental appointments
  • 1 doctor appointment
  • 1 day with sister- and brother-in-law
  • 1 guitar lesson
  • 2 drum lessons
  • 1 sleepover
  • shop for birthday dinner
  • bake birthday cake
  • prepare birthday dinner

We are plumb tired.

Quilting? Not even on the radar—sigh.

It will be easier when teenage boy has his driver’s license; he’s just not ready yet. He’s not reckless and doesn’t speed; he just needs more practice scanning and anticipating. For not putting our almost-17-year-old son alone behind the wheel, all citizens in the greater Denver area should thank us.

I decided to make Ross’s birthday cake yesterday instead of today so he could enjoy it all weekend. Here are some photos of the cake in progress:

Ready for the oven.

Ready for the oven.

Just out of the oven.

Not one of my finer skills, frosting cakes, but since I’m not competing for a spot on the Food Network, it gets a passing grade.

Here’s a slice:

We've had a little more humidity lately, and I think that helped with the cake's texture this time. It was incredibly moist and dense. You can also see where some of the cake looks darker than other parts. That's a good sign that it's turned out well.

I think the little bit of extra humidity in the air helped with the cake’s texture this time. It was incredibly moist and dense, just like it is when it’s baked at lower altitude.

If you look closely, you can see that some parts of the cake are darker than others. That's a good sign the cake is a success.
